The Obama Watch

The MTV President

In America, those who exude a certain type of attraction or charisma are often christened with the sobriquet of "rock star." For those of us who've outgrown the allures of the brain-shattering, soul-stealing muck that has masqueraded as music for the last few decades, this term is not exactly a desirable one for those engaged in anything but narcissistic and immature pursuits.

Yet for many in this country, comparison to a rock star is the ultimate compliment and a cherished goal. Into this sad state of our country comes President Barack Obama, whom many have labeled our first post-Baby Boomer president and naturally, a rock star who can dance too!

Bill Clinton was the first Baby Boomer president and he was followed by another, George W. Bush. Yet Clinton, who was also accorded presidential rock star status, was, by the time he reached the White House, an accomplished politician, having spent 15 years as Attorney General and Governor of Arkansas. Similarly, Bush was the twice-elected Governor of Texas.

But despite their differences in posture and policy, both were products of basically the same electorate; one still largely made up of those who recalled the tumult of the 20th century and made the handling of serious issues a priority in choosing their leader. Obama, on the other hand is the product of another constituency; one who has no memory of the sacrifices and hardships endured by the Greatest Generation; one for whom a rock star in office is worthy of the supreme adjective: cool.

Baby Boomers were the first generation to be reared on television, but not to the extent of their children and grandchildren. The advent of cable and satellite technology brought 24/7 news, MTV and other so-called entertainment in a such way that television and those who make it became the omnipresent arbiters of social mores. If TV was the babysitter of the Boomers, it became mother, father, teacher and preacher to all who came after.

So it's not surprising that two-thirds of the biggest turnout of the vaunted "youth vote" in years turned out to elect a man of scanty credentials and no executive experience at all. Since the 1960s, maturity is not considered cool, and most kids since that awful decade have grown up thinking that their goal in life is to clean up the messes made by their parents; the reasons behind them be damned. And Mr. Obama is the essence of that modern mantra: coolness counts most, and consequences be damned.

This is not to say that voters in this country have never favored style over substance before, but in the confluence of Obama's packaged persona and the adoration heaped on him by a fawning press, we have reached a truly frightening stage in our history. We have heard zombie-like children singing psalms to him and witnessed eerie loyalty oaths sworn to him; the testimonies of those who have promised to be better people simply because of his election.

However talented the man might be, Barack Obama as silver-tongued savior, is in reality a creation of the mainstream media. When George W. Bush was inarticulate at times, he was the butt of jokes and worse; a buffoon who got through life on the coattails of his father. Yet, when Obama stutters through rehearsed speeches or maniacally laughs while discussing our ailing economy on 60 Minutes, these gaffes are either ignored or oddly offered as further proof of his oratorical genius.

But why? Because those who control most major newspapers and TV are immature dreamers still stuck on their vision of a socialist utopia; the stuff of teenaged vows to "change the world." And their hero epitomizes all they hold dear; a hip, youthful knight who champions activism -- whatever that means -- and looks good doing it.

And so we have managed to elect a man whose brief time in office has reeked of political immaturity. It's as if like a child, he is constantly trying on his father's shoes by purporting to accept responsibility, while seconds later claiming, "It wasn't me...I didn't do it!" Try this from a recent town hall meeting in California:

Listen, I'll take responsibility. I'm the president. We've got a big mess that we're cleaning up. Nobody here drafted those contracts. Nobody here was responsible for supervising AIG and allowing themselves to put the economy at risk by some of the outrageous behavior that they were engaged in. We've got a lot on our plate -- but it is appropriate when you're in charge to make sure that stuff doesn't happen like this.

Can you conceive of your own father, much less the President of the United States, alibiing his way out of responsibility in this manner? Can you imagine a real statesman using the word "stuff" when speaking of issues of vital, national importance? Such is not the stuff of a great, oratorical leader. The fact that he feels it necessary to demean the office of the presidency by going on late-night talk shows and making childish jokes about the Special Olympics only adds to the immaturity factor.

This country used to favor electing presidents that it could look up to, that possessed the kind of maturity needed in tough times. Like George W. Bush or hate him, there were very few accusations of frivolity surrounding his presidency. And despite what went on behind closed doors, Bill Clinton at least made an outward show of gravity; he made sure to tell us that he felt our pain, he didn't laugh at it.

So here we are. Either we have three or more years of being regaled by the cool and the hip -- watching our president dance and laugh while America burns -- or we can encourage Americans to hold Obama's feet to the fire. Because style will only go so far; even among kids, who will hopefully one day grow up into responsible citizens who'll have to pay the piper for this economic farce. And when that time comes, they'll only have themselves to blame.

you have to admit it is hilarious hearing people like Buffett and Andy Grove grumble about how this is not the Obama they voted for. Weren't they listening to this moron? They voted for a guy neither one of them would hire to be a clerk. Never, ever forget "proper tire inflation",that was the tell this guy is a complete fool. And McCain agreed with him! Please Republicans give us a real conservative candidate,no more Doles,Bushes,McCains,Fords, and absolutely no more compassionate conservatism

Kitty| 3.25.09 @ 6:25AM

Obama is portraying himself as a weird combination of Urkel and Bart "I didn't do it, no one saw me do it, there's no way you can prove anything!" Simpson.

It's frightening to think that there are adults, who can vote and drive cars, who think that image is cool and hip.

Without his teleprompter to tell him what to do last night, he lost his cool at one juncture when Ed Henry of CNN asked him a question about why he didn't show anger as soon as he found out about the AIG bonuses.

Obama's angry stare and response to Ed Henry leads to more many more questions, chief amongst them, who is this classless individual who throws his weight against those weaker than him, i.e., he's a bully.

And this isn't the first time this has occurred. Before he even received his party's nomination, he went into the audience after one reporter, getting right in her face and informing her that he's "sensitive about his ears" after she wrote a column referring to his over sensitive ears, which are attached to his over sensitive body, which are connected to his over sensitive immature brain.

Which leads to even further questions. Does Obama believe the public is comprised of mind readers? It's normal to ask questions of political figures but apparently, the infantile Obama can't be questioned. If his teleprompter is absent, you will surely be verbally attacked.

Further questions should be asked. Is he already cracking under the strain, as evidenced by the giddy immature and sometimes unpredictable behavior?

This article skirted another point. It goes back to the Rush Limbaugh comment during his brief stint at ESPN as a sports announcer. As soon as Rush touched the third rail of human experience, racial observations, he was finished at ESPN. A black commentator made a similar comment at ESPN but that was okay.

Here is the quote and I believe there is some connotation here for the Obama situation.

"Sorry to say this, I don't think he's been that good from the get-go," Limbaugh said. "I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL. The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. There is a little hope invested in McNabb, and he got a lot of credit for the performance of this team that he didn't deserve. The defense carried this team."

Unfortunately for America, Obama has no experienced defense out there, just a group of tax cheats, left wing nuts on the environment and his own false bravado.

The conservatives are such bitter losers and the loser conservatives are such small-minded racist that it is easy to understand why the Republican party is an out-of-touch extremist minority.

Conservatives who feel sentimental for George W. Bush are the most pathetic of all.

The nation rejected you people. The nation loves President Brack Obama.

Get back to your talk radio, folks, because that's all you have left ...

I became truly frightened when, as President of the United States, Mr. Obama wrapped his arm around and signed his first bill, he uttered these famous words for posterity "I'm left-handed. Get used to it."
While I would expect a remark such as this from my son who is 10 years old, it somehow does not fit with what I expect from the President.

JohanB| 3.25.09 @ 7:16AM

Compassionate conservatism was a worthy ideal when Katrina struck, but was perhaps carried too far what with bailouts that began with Lehman Bros..
Extremely stupid behavior of Republicans NOT to realize the American public would see thru this scam and so be thrown to the wolves late 2006!
When a majority of voters continue to vote(not a certainty!) in 2012, Republicans should nominate somebody like Rick SANTORUM, who is reasonably liberal in domestic policy, but a stalwart on security for the nation...and NOT likely to mess too much with defense issues..

Send in the Clown

It began innocently enough.
A few weeks before Election Day, I ran into a friend on the street. I’ll call her Jane. Naturally, our talk turned toward politics. I asked her which candidate she was backing.
“I’m voting for Chuckles, of course. Duh. Isn’t everyone who is remotely cool?”
“What do you know about him?”
“Only that he’s the finest, most intelligent, most serious, classiest and soberest man in this country and quite possibly the whole planet. Why? You’re scaring me. Don’t tell me you’re not aboard the Chuckles Wagon.’”
“I’m not. When I look at him, I think I see something different from what you see.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Well, for example, doesn’t the orange fright wig give you pause?”
“People can style their hair however they want. I’m not going to judge him.”
“How about the big red rubber nose? Does that distract you at all?”
“He’s entitled to wear whatever makes him feel good about himself. For all I know, he’s been shamed by abusive parents for having some disfigurement.”
“What about the white makeup all over his face? The blue stars painted around his eyes? The gigantic red and white frown painted over his mouth?”
“Hellooooo. It’s called personal expression. He’s probably showing respect for his ancient, authentic culture.”
“So the oversized, multi-colored coat doesn’t raise any flags with you?”
“He looks so presidential.”
“But his bowtie lights up and spins, and when he pulls on it, it plays ‘Pop Goes the Weasel’.”
“You just don’t get the whole concept of ‘hip,’ do you? Ever hear of a thing called irony? It’s about challenging the status quo. It’s called change.”
“You don’t think that the plastic carnation that squirts water is revealing?”
“It’s great to finally have a candidate with a genuinely funny, non-offensive sense of humor.”
“The trumpet that blows bubbles?”
“I hear music.”
“What about those ridiculously billowy striped pants that only go to his shins?”
“Everyone knows they’re wearing pants shorter this year.”
“And the size 55 shoes don’t bring anything to mind?”
“Just that people should get out of his way so he can walk.”
“But he always pulls that Chihuahua dressed as a wizard around in a wagon. Doesn’t that tell you anything?
“It tells me how much he truly cares about those less able to care for themselves.”
“Surely the exploding cigar says something to you about the guy.”
“I don’t normally approve of smoking, but it’s a cultural thing with his people. Plus, he’s generating tax revenue that will be used wisely to teach our children not to smoke.”
“Why do you suppose he travels by unicycle?”
“Some people care about the environment.”
“And the bowling-pin juggling doesn’t suggest anything to you?”
“I don’t know about you, but I want a president who is able to multitask.”
“Ok, then,” I said, astonished that she could not see what was staring her in the face. “Sounds like you know your guy. I gotta run. See you later!”
I ran into Jane again three months after Chuckles was elected.
“How are you doing?” I asked.
“Terrible!” she cried.
“Why?”
“Haven’t you noticed? Our president is a F***ING CLOWN! How did that happen?”
How indeed.
HAH! I kid, of course. When I ran into Jane, the dialogue actually went like this:
“How are you doing?” I asked.
“Fantastic. Don’t you feel like a fool for doubting Chuckles?
“What the hell are you talking about,” I exploded. “ What he’s unleashed in Conress puts Barnum and Baily to shame! He replaced the Oval Office with a Midway replete with games of chance – and all of them are crooked! He’s installed a freak show for a cabinet, and his carnie thugs shake down every single customer in the parking lot,” said I, barely skimming the surface of Chuckles’s nefarious actes diabolique.
“You know, I feel sorry for you,” said my erstwhile friend. “I really do. You hate Chuckles. You’re just a hater. Why don’t you want him to succeed? You need anger management and most likely open-ended therapy. The good news is that you are an excellent candidate for the administration’s new selective castration program. Don’t worry. As president of Friends of Chuckles for the whole of Sector 6, I’ve already given your name to my superiors. They’ll fix you free of charge. I sincerely hope you can learn to care about others.”
Three weeks later I was beheaded as an Enemy of the Circus.

Jack Hughes| 3.25.09 @ 8:18AM

To David Matthews, et. al.: I voted for Bush twice, and in the end had only disdain for his administration. However, it's taken only a couple of months for me to look back at Bush and "the good old days".

Yesterday after work a bunch or us were sitting in a restaurant when a headline from CNN read:"Obama, new Teflon president". We all looked at each other and said Huh? Doesn't CNN read the polls? Zogby, a well known Democrat, put out a poll showing 50% approval for OdumbOne, with the highest disapproval for a president in recent history. Higher disapproval than Bush AFTER the recount. If that's Teflon, I think someone should point out to CNN what teflon is.

The media now make up the news, not reports it.

Political stink that should all be coming to light in the courts in about 6-8 months as his former buddy Hot Rod Blago, who was on WLS AM radio just now for 2 hours hosting, is just starting his "pull the covers off the Chicago machine" tour which will include taking down the already faltering Messiah to nowhere.

I have only pity for the young folks who bought into Obama's schtick. That's fine, they are young and impressionable. But most of them will hopefully mature, and analyze things better next time. However, I have contempt for all of the "moderate" fools who bought into Obama's sizzle rather than look at his steak. In other words, even though he had the most liberal voting record in the Senate, they thought they were voting for Bill Clinton, or Bob Dole. To paraphrase Bill Parcells; "you are only as good as your record". So these chumps who voted for Obama will have to live with their vote for the next few years.

It's a big deal tha Obama is left-handed? So was Clinton and Bush Sr.

gdyt4488| 3.25.09 @ 12:09PM

Interesting article. Relevantly, many influential voices have repeatedly said that Obama--born 1961--is part of Generation Jones, born 1954-1965, between the Boomers and Generation X. Google Generation Jones, and you'll see it’s gotten a ton of media attention, and many top commentators from many top publications and networks (Washington Post, Time magazine, NBC, Newsweek, ABC, etc.) specifically use this term to describe Obama.

Here is a recent op-ed about Obama as the first GenJones President in USA TODAY:
http://www.usatoday.com/printedition/news/20090127/column27_st.art.htm

And here is a recent interview with the guy who coined the term "Generation Jones":

Hank, four posts above^, President's Bush 41 and Clinton didn't say "Get used to it!"

That's narcissistic bully-blab! It says a lot more about obama than observers like you could ever comprehend, as evidenced by your puerile comments.

MDASK 99| 3.25.09 @ 1:47PM

To David Matthews, et. al - if you can't make an argument without insulting and name calling (racist, losers, out of touch, etc) - you've already lost. BTW - 70 million voted for Barack, but 60 million voted AGAINST - so, it's hardly a mandate or a "the nation rejected you people" - you people happen to include Americans, presumably like yourself - we're all entitled to a government that has our best interests in mind whether or not "our guy" won. Hey, isn't that your momma calling you to dinner?

Mike| 3.25.09 @ 2:12PM

Since O-Blame-A became President and it has become evident to anyone with two functioning neurons that he is incapable and incompetent to make and execute decisions it was only a matter of time before the Loons on the Left resorted to their favorite time proven excuse: Anyone who criticizes O-Blame-A is a racist.

I see the term being used more frequently on liberal blogs and by other seething morons in the mdeia as they can no longer defend the Idiot in Chief on rational facts.

This emperor with no clothes is failing. China is flexing its economic muscle pushing for the dollar to be removed as the measure of currency, the EU is disgusted with strategy of spending to turn the economy around, and Russia sees a timid child in the oval office as the opportunity to regain its lost ground as a superpower.

Michele San Pietro| 3.25.09 @ 2:14PM

Obama is a brat. That is all one need say about him. He comes from Generation Brat, who are starting to lose their jobs in record numbers as people with knowledge, education and a work ethic, not to mention manners, who know that LOL is not a word, replace them. It's instructive that in past recessions/depressions it was the older people who were fired because of our larger salaries. Now it's Generation Brat being fired because frankly they're not worth even the salaries they are paid.

Americans Please give yourselves a bit of credit, what is the point of a President who is only a PUPPET?. It's more Democratic to govern your selves.

Republicans, and Democrats, the Iraq and Iran WAR was planned long before BUSH ever came to office, all they had to do is engineer a reason to go to WAR, which Bush and Blair did, they got rumbled, no WMD. All WMD comes from the USA, so SADDAM could not have anything he was not given. That's where the MEDIA comes in, to fool the masses.

Iran has no WMD, they are not seeking any developements of Nuclear WMD, the IAEA says so, but the war mongers says the IAEA is not being honest, and thjats the only evidence the world has. They are a world organisation like the UN, if the information is not reliable enough for the USA why do they keep sponcering them?.

Obama says his administration will keep up the santions, and false accusations. then put out a false message to the Iranians, and expect them to take it seriously why? do they think the Iranians are as stupid as Americans?.

The Iranians was once an Empire before the Greeks, and the British and before the Americans, give them some credibility please they are not idiots. Obama is no one's fool, but he is not allowed to be President he is Black. Obama is following orders from the same people who controled BUSH.

Obama would make a great leader, but Americans has been sold out to Private Bankers.

To show the stupidity, America attacked the first Empire in the world, Iraq former Babylon, here we have the first Empire being attacked by the last Empire America? It's almost Biblical, if you know History and read history. There is more to life than crooked Bankers, and false prophets, the Rigilous nutters in America who accept money for Planes, big homes, sexual diviencies. Forgetting these people does not follow the 10 Commandements. They get Tax breaks from the Government, as long as they can sway the people to vote Republicans now do you call that a Democracy?.

America is on it's last leg, it's about to collapse, under a mountain of debt, and fancy words.

700 Trillion of Derivatives, and the American economy has contracted by 30 Trillion USD since Sept 2008, and headind down. Fancy words will not solve American problems till Americans recogonise it's not a American governmental problem but a National problem, that the people needs to act on.

Hey, Mathews, stick to your music. You have no idea what you're talking about. This guy is an empty-suit and you know it. Whoever is pulling his strings has really screwed up. You and your brain-dead fellow Obamabots don't have a clue. You know nothing about this guy and, worse, you revel in your complete ignorance.

Hello Bitter Conservative Losers,

I spent the day at a beautiful place and return here to observe a bunch of unhappy bitter conservatives moan, whine and cry about the President of the United States, Barack Hussein Obama.

I enjoy your crying. Keep on crying. You'll be crying for a very long time.

Where is Sarah Palin? Where has she gone? Conservatives love their Sarah Palin, don't they?

Oh well, conservatives, you people can keep on crying. The Republican party is sinking like the Titanic because of you ... so keep on being unintelligent, uneducated extremists.

You'll see how well that sells in 2010 and 2012.

David Mathews| 3.25.09 @ 7:04PM

Hello Jim Spence,

* "Someone tell David Mathews that his photography sucks. I've been an art director and designer for 40 years, reviewed thousands of portfolios, and would never give this jerks "work" a second look. "

Boo hoo hoo ... an unhappy conservative!

Keep on crying, conservative. You'll have plenty more reasons to cry in the years ahead.

David Mathews| 3.25.09 @ 7:06PM

Hello Jack Hughes,

* "To David Matthews, et. al.: I voted for Bush twice, and in the end had only disdain for his administration. However, it's taken only a couple of months for me to look back at Bush and "the good old days". "

Boo hoo hoo ... the conservatives keep losing and they conservatives keep crying!

Keep on crying conservatives and you are going to keep on losing!

Don't get mad--just ridicule the libtards. The thin-skinned, humorless morons are an easy target. Buffoons all. Mannixman--loved your post! Don't be a stranger

Obama is the modern Nero who laughs while the US and the world economy burns.

"Mr. President, we have several heads of state scheduled to meet with you tomorrow."

"Quick! Someone get down to Costco and buy some tasteful gifts to exchange!"

"Yes sir, right away sir. By the way, due to misguided liberal political policies from the last several decades, the economy seems to be in a sort of meltdown."

"Quick! Someone get me a copy of Das Kapital and help me find my copy of the Saul Alinsky handbook. See if Michelle will let me borrow her copy of The Manifesto too. Chop! Chop! No time to waste. And call Leno...I need some air time!"

"Yes sir. Oh, last thing sir...Iran, Syria and North Korea have begun coordinated attacks against Israel and Iraq sir."

"*gulp* Get me Rex Kramer!"

Do not forget the effect of drugs. It is not funny at all, anymore. From marijuana to crack, millions are being damaged. And, the damaged vote democrat. They are the most influenced by the " culture " they ingest through endless blasts of electronic impulses be they video, audio, and other forms of stimulation. A nation that wanted to survive and thrive would turn it's full might to bring this decay and destruction to a halt. Instead, we sit back and do zilch. Every real strong and red blooded American who wants to take action backs down when some ludicrous lawyer or community activist waggles a finger in their face and bleats " racist" or " unconstitutional ". Wanna save the country ? Why not take on the gangs ? Do any of us have a clue to how much damage they do ? Gangs like the crips and bloods control parts of our cities. Why ? You gonna stop it with more social programs ? Pretty stories on the television about a hip hop artist getting "involved" with kids ? Wanna stop it ?Crips and Bloods meet the Army Rangers and the Navy Seals. And, a truly organized and directed economic boycott to bring down the liberal, anti American media is an act of powerful patriotism we all can be part of.

2009 – America is burning.
2010 – America is economically dead
2011 – America is inhumanly attacked
2012 – America is sold to the Chinese
2013 – America declares independence
2014 – America convicts those responsible
2016 – America is never f*** with again

Michele San Pietro| 3.29.09 @ 1:02PM

I am afraid this is going to happen, dear Conrad... we cannot be sure of anything as long as America is run by catastrophic presidents like Barack Obama and it has morons like David Mathews among its inhabitants.
