Beyond Bill Richardson

The Obama transition team was aware of New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson's relationship with the firm currently being investigated, CDR Financial Products, because Richardson had introduced the firm's founder, David Rubin, to Obama fundraisers during the Democrat convention in Denver last August.

Richardson withdrew his name from nomination for Commerce Secretary due to a grand jury investigation into possible financial dealings between his New Mexico administration and Rubin's firm, CDR Financial.

But it isn't just Obama and Richardson that Rubin has ties to. According to federal law enforcement officials familiar with the investigation, federal officials are also looking into CDR's political and financial ties to Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, as well as to Democrat state and local officials in Illinois, California, Florida, and Pennsylvania.

Rendell placed Rubin on a political patronage commission in Pennsylvania, and Rubin was also given a seat on a Los Angeles City commission back in 2002, both seemingly as the result of political contributions to political action committees. Rubin has also been a financial supporter of Rev. Al Sharpton.

CDR also had close business ties to Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, marketing and selling financial instruments created through low-income housing "lease to own" programs across the country. "If someone wants to understand just how deep Democrats are into the housing bubble and the economic crisis, they should look at some of the financial wheeling and dealing around some of those 'lease to own' programs," says a former Freddie Mac lobbyist based in Washington. "It's a veritable 'who's who' of Democratic state and local politics from New York to Los Angeles."

Rubin, founded the firm known for many years as Chambers, Dunhill, Rubin & Co, though there is no Chambers or Dunhill associated with the firm. It appears that after a number of embarrassing IRS investigations into alleged back-door deals related to municipal bond financing in Atlanta and other localities in the late 1990s, the firm's name was changed to CDR Financial.

Richardson's relationship to Rubin goes back to the early 2000s, in which time Rubin has given Richardson and his PACs more than $100,000. In October 2003, Rubin gave $25,000 to Richardson's Moving America Forward. In 2004, Rubin cut another check for another Richardson PAC, "¡Si Se Puede! Boston 2004." Translated, from the Spanish, the PAC is called Yes, We Can, and it financed Richardson's political activities for the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston.

According to a Bloomberg News report and New Mexico records, between 2003 and 2004, CDR made $951,566 advising the New Mexico Finance Authority on $420 million of interest rate swaps. By comparison, when New York City offered $900 million in derivatives, it paid its adviser about $400,000.

"Long before Bill Richardson was governor, New Mexico was known to be one of the most corrupt states in the country," says a current Federal Bureau of Investigations official who has overseen criminal investigations related to drug-trafficking and organized crime in the state. "If there is anything to this investigation, it appears that it's just politics as usual for New Mexico."

Is this the same David Rubin married to the CNN "journalist" Chritiane Anampour?

Robert Rosencrans| 1.5.09 @ 8:08AM

While the Democrats appear to be drowning in a cesspool or corruption, the media is simply focused on the Great Obama and his transition to power.

Obama promised hope, change and transparency. So far, they're holding onto the meaningless concepts of hope and change, while transparency is being thrown under the bus.

One has to wonder how Obama, who was birthed around such corrupt influences, has remained squeaky clean.

pianogirl88| 1.5.09 @ 8:19AM

The CNN "journalist" is married to Jamie Rubin, who used to be a spokesman for the State Dept. during the Clinton years. Whatever David Rubin's problems are, at least don't link him to the CNN babe!

Eric Dondero| 1.5.09 @ 8:52AM

This is just getting better, and better.

Cliche' I know, but please pass that damn popcorn!

Interloper| 1.5.09 @ 9:04AM

It is wise this blogger writes under a pseudonym. Putting a name to such scurrilous, unsourced and uncorroborated claims would open him to legal liability.

Of more interest is that The American Spectator's audience does not question obviously false material. They have been trained in the Pavlovian response of slobbering glee the bigger the lies they are being fed.

Reality? The probe of CDR will likely not result in any exposure for Gov. Richardson. He may go on to serve in a role for the incoming administration.

Gerard| 1.5.09 @ 9:16AM

Interloper indulges in wishful thinking. The Illinois shenanigans have led to other mirth and merriment throughout our republic. Funny how certain individuals like Rubin show up in many locations and with many individuals. Might be interesting to have him and Tony Rezko form a harmonizing duet on the Federal judicial stage.

Linda| 1.5.09 @ 9:25AM

Here's a little input on Jamie Rubin http://www.henrymakow.com/we_all_are_victims_of_a_giant.html

valentine| 1.5.09 @ 9:28AM

I live in New Mexico. Nothing here resembles living in the United States. It's very backward. Most families here do not want their children educated because they will leave home. They want them to have children and stay here. If you want to understand New Mexico, spend two years here.

Bob| 1.5.09 @ 9:46AM

Oh pshaw.... We have learned that there is corruption in politics. We have also learned that there is deal making. How could you believe elected politicians who need money for campaigns would take it from people who want favors from them?

Corruption is neither Democrat or Republican -- it is in the DNA of politics. It is hilarious to see lefties talk about Republican corruption and righties talk about Democrat corruption.

I look at it a different way. In general, Obama has made very good cabinet picks. In this case, Richardson, a lifelong politician, has no business being commerce secretary. He has zero experience in commerce. This was simply a reward for support. I'm glad he's out.... Now let's get a qualified person in that position...

Steve| 1.5.09 @ 9:52AM

Interloper,

What do you not get? Mr. Richardson has taken himself out of consideration. If innocent, wouldn't you demand the right to fight to clear your good name If ther charges are false, and thereis no substance, then why not demand a hearing and put the "vast, right-wing conspiracy"
away forever?

Interloper| 1.5.09 @ 9:57AM

Gerard, you are confusing far Right enclaves like this one with the mainstream. In the big ole world your ilk avoids, Blago's issues are viewed as they should be, ie., problems that will cost him his job. Only in snake pits of the Right is President-elect Barrack Obama claimed to be responsible for Blago and other pols' problems.

And, anyone on the Right involved in "mirth and merriment" now is partying while the Titanic sinks. Toss one back for Interloper as you go down.

Interloper| 1.5.09 @ 10:02AM

Steve, Richardson can wait to be cleared while serving as governor. He has decided not to further complicate his life, a smart choice. Since he is already gainfully employed, he doesn't really need to shift into a position in the new administration. By waiting, he may avail himself of a role that suits him better, especially if Mrs. Clinton chooses to serve one term or less.

Bob| 1.5.09 @ 10:12AM

Interloper, please. Boards like this are part of the "Hear no evil" constitution of right wing ideologues just like MSNBC is for left wingers. Ideologues don't want to stare veracity in the face.

Case in point? I've provided an analysis that Palin was a drain on the ticket based strictly on data and the people here either can't properly read a graph or don't want to look at the reality. These people only participate on boards like this, listen to Fox News and Rush Limbaugh only, and are the true "Hear no evil" participants.

Guilt by association is used by all politicians, but was particularly used by right wingers this election relating to Ayers, Rezco, Wright, etc. The fact that it didn't work should give a clue to people of intellect. But the main problem is that these people give a bad name to all Republicans.

Steve, I doubt whether Richardson really took himself out of consideration. First of all, the Obama team knew about the investigation but probably thought it would blow over quickly. Secondly, the commerce position is not the one Richardson really wanted -- he wanted State. My guess, and it's only a guess, is that it was best for both sides if Richardson is out. He will return to the Obama administration in a year or two. Mark my words.

Tim Sullivan| 1.5.09 @ 10:23AM

Wonder if the PAC received money from HP after negociating moving 1500 jobs from Coloradeo to New Mexico. It only cost the state $55M.

Interloper| 1.5.09 @ 10:25AM

Exactly, Bob. With the far Right trying to link the new administration to Gov. Blagojevich's problems, the transition team is heading off a second such offensive by waiting for Gov. Richardson to be cleared.

Heck! I will not be surprised if John Edwards also eventually serves in the Obama administration. After all sex scandals in politics are almost sui generis.

As for Sarah Palin, I believe her appeal is that the far Right Republicans think she makes a capable demagogue. They are right about that, but I do not think most of the electorate is looking for a capable demagogue to lead the country. They're backing lack of substance at a time when seriousness is sought.

Sherry| 1.5.09 @ 10:50AM

Why is no one mentioning the fact that David Rubin also contributed to Obama?

As far as John Edwards - he just needs to talk to Barney Frank - sleep with Freddie personnel while giving them money and protecting them through legislation - pay a prositute you found in a personal ad - then put the prostitute (now your lover) on OUR payroll as your "personal assistant" while the prostitute operates a call service out of your home - HOW DOES THIS MAN KEEP GETTING ELECTED????

Marvin Destin| 1.5.09 @ 10:52AM

Bill Clinton had an entire department run by Patsy Thomasson in the White House managing the damage control on 54 separate scandals and the diagram of that project was an entire full page in the Wall Street Journal. What happened? Everyone of them swept under the rug and Bill Clinton TODAY says, no one ever found he or Hillary had ever done anything wrong. The Democrat Party never pays any consequences for anything. Its that simple. Meanwhile Scooter Libby gets convicted for a crime the prosecutor literally knew someone else had committed if there was a crime at all. Hypocrisy reigns.

InaVirginia| 1.5.09 @ 11:07AM

"Long before Bill Richardson was governor, New Mexico was known to be one of the most corrupt states in the country," says a current Federal Bureau of Investigations official. Check out Time Magazine from 1949. They eventually had 69 indictments and even had the governor removed. First Federal civil rights prosecution. Those were the days when we had competent newspaper reporters and newspapers willing to publish the truth.

Tim| 1.5.09 @ 11:24AM

Gawd Dang, Two democtartic Governors under major investigations and Obama hasn't even been sworn in yet.

Then when you thrown in the Democratic senate fiascos in Illinois and Minn.

Well.....should be an intersesting 2009........

Bob| 1.5.09 @ 11:25AM

Marvin, in case you didn't know, lying under oath is a crime. Certainly the Democrats did not pay a price with Elliot Spitzer, right? And you don't think they'll pay for Blagojevich? It seems to me the same person that went after Libby is also going after Blago, right?

Marvin, et. al., please stop with the persecution complex, it only makes Republicans look dumb. All of these on both the right and the left are small in comparison to the unitary executive and signing statement issues which really have hurt our country. Both Bush and Clinton are guilty of signing statements, by the way.

You really need to stop with the persecution complex and move on to bigger issues.

Robert Rosencrans| 1.5.09 @ 11:29AM

It's obvious that many don't recognize the sheer genius of Barack Obama in this situation. Barack stated he wanted an ethical government and one way of doing that is to get suckers who may be corrupt to volunteer for positions where they may have to pass some ethical bar.

Then when they are forced to withdraw we are let on on their little secret. It's a very clever plan and could only have come from a Messiah like figure like Barack Obama.

Bob| 1.5.09 @ 1:07PM

C'mon Robert, you don't really believe in conspiracy theories, do you? Richardson was chosen for two reasons -- Hispanics and his support for Obama. This is not good for Obama and his Hispanic constituency. Richardson is not qualified for this position as he lacks the knowledge of commerce. You need someone in this position who has actually run an international business.

David| 1.5.09 @ 1:43PM

Marvin Destin hit the nail on the head. Democrats rarely if ever pay the price for their shenanigans, no matter how egregious. To prove it one only has to look at our new president, who spent almost 20 years in a hate-filled, so-called "Christian church". That fact alone was enough for Americans to have run him out of politics forever.

David J| 1.5.09 @ 1:44PM

INTERLOPER says: Of more interest is that The American Spectator's audience does not question obviously false material.

this is all just a distraction from the heavenly bliss we'll feel when The One is inaugurated. Then off to the re-education camp for the deniers!

Bob| 1.5.09 @ 2:06PM

David, so now YOU are deciding which churches can be Christian and which cannot? What if a church has a guest pastor that talks about witchcraft in front of Sarah Palin -- and she says nothing. Is that a "Christian" church?

You are an example of why the Republican party should relegate social conservatives to the back of the bus -- bigotry and yes, hate....

Now if you want to talk about Democrats paying the price, we can surely talk about Spitzer and Blago.

And what laws did Obama break by going to his church? None, of course. Why didn't McCain really pay the price with the Keating 5? Hmmm....

Now, I think it is all right to question Obama's judgement in attending Trinity, but not its legality. I think the world would probably be a better place if we had more people like Obama who were married once, did not get his girl pregnant prior to marriage like Palin, and did not dump his first wife after having an affair with another woman like McCain.

So let's stop this nonsense. It isn't a Democrat or Republican issue. Both sides do the wrong things and both get blamed.

Interloper| 1.5.09 @ 2:12PM

Whoo! The tinfoil hat crowd has arrived in force.

Both Richardson and Blagojevich were being probed before President-elect Obama started his campaign. The news is the depth of the Blago probe and the charges. Richardson's exposure appears minimal. He just needs to wait it out.

As for prostitutes, there is at least one Republican senator currently serving who admits to using a call girl ring for years.

And, let's not forget the sex scandal of the year. Larry Craig is still playing footsy in Washington for the time being.

David | 1.5.09 @ 2:16PM

Bob, have you followed the news the past 20 or so years? Republicans almost always pay, and pay big, for their perceived wrongs. Look what happened to ex-Governor and Senator George Allen. He used the word "macaca" one time to describe an Indian leftist who was stalking him everywhere he went on the campaign trail and walla - he loses his senate seat and could not even enter the republican primary for president when he was the frontrunner at the time. Trent Lott says some nice things about 100 year-old Strom Thurmond at his birthday party, and words and perceived intentions were put in his mouth and distorted from all reality. So Lott had to resign his leadership post. But Obama and his family can voluntarily sit in a hate-filled, anti-American, anti-white church, er...uh, I'll call it a club instead, and he gets elected president. The examples are too numerous to waste any more time with it.

When it comes to Patrick Fitzgerald, he knew from the beginning that Scooter Libby did not leak Plame's name - and that Richard Armitage did. What was he investigating, Bob? Yet Fitz pursued people for years about who said "exactly" what to whom and at "exactly" what time such things were said. There was no crime to begin with, Bob. Wake the flip up - take the blinders off. Fitz came out in news conferences and made his case against Libby in the media, with all sorts of speculation about how higher ups (Cheney, Bush and Rove) in the administration may have been involved. Then he dropped most of what he accused Libby of when he actually had to put up or shut up in the courtroom. I closely followed the trial. Every witness Fitz put on the stand had trouble with their memories, just like Libby did. I will concede there was a jury who reached a verdict, but I didn't expect an acquittal with any jury from that part of the country.

Fitzgerald has done the same thing to Blago, and I believe that's because it helps Obama and democrats if they can call Blago "the crazy man" and point the finger at him. It takes the focus off of everyone else. Fitz said all kinds of things about Blago in the news conference about how solid a case he has against the governor, while at the same time, before his investigation is over, CONFIDENTLY proclaimed that Obama and his administration were not involved in any wrong doing whatsoever and they are not even being looked at for anything suspicious. Now Bob, how can Fitz have know that there was nothing to implicate Obama and his admin when Fitz's investigation is not over. A total 180 from the way he handled the Plame matter. Then what does Fitz do: he asks for an extension before making his case to the grand jury because he apparently doesn't have the evidence at this time to get an indictment.

Yea Bob, your head-in-the-sand thinking makes it clear to me how Obama got elected.

David| 1.5.09 @ 2:34PM

Bob, I had not read your post about Obama's church before my last posting, so I'll respond now.

First, as to "if Palin attends a church and a witch is present" or whatever the point is, Palin would be a "guest" at that church, while Obama and his family were "members" of Wright's club. They chose to become members and attend.

Second, as to "do I get to decide which churches are Christian ...", no I don't. What I do get to do is to use my brain and know what the Bible and Christianity do teach, and that the rantings that repeatedly happened at Obama's place has nothing whatsoever to do with Christianity. If you don't know that Bob, then maybe you better stick to subjects other than the Christian religion.

Third, as to "the world would be better if everyone, like Obama, was married one time ...", no one said he did not love his family. I have no clue what you mean by "getting his girl pregnant before marriage like Palin". Why confuse matters with such nonsense?

Fourth, as to "Obama attending Trinity is not illegal", no one said it was illegal, Bob. Stop trying to confuse matters. You are right, is was all about judgment. It was probably the worst judgment by any person ever seeking national office in American history.

Which brings us back to Marvin's and my original point: Obama, another DEMOCRAT, did not pay a price despite attending AND personally choosing to be a member 0f a hate-filled club for almost 20 years.

Interloper| 1.5.09 @ 2:49PM

David, you are a poster boy for the embittered white, probably Southern, voter Paul Krugman described so well in a reason op-ed article. You are so used to wink-and-nod racism that you do not realize most Americans see right through it. Trent Lott, George Allen and their heirs Chip Saltsman and Katon Dawson have outlasted the peaking of the Southern Strategy as a successful way to obtain votes. It is time to repudiate them, not regret their exposure.

As for the Obamas' former church, I am at a loss to see much to criticize. It is a very successful congregation and the largest in its denomination. The attacks on Rev. Jeremiah Wright rely on two snippets of sermons that last less than 10 minutes total. They are taken out of context. Like Obama, my gripe with Rev. Wright is his belief in some rather wacky conspiracy theories, a trait he shares with many people here.

I see a greater problem with the Southern Baptists (Sen. McCain's congregation) and the Mormons (Mitt Romney's). Both denominations excluded people of color for more than a century and deemed them inferior, only fit for slavery. The LDS claimed blacks were fated for Hell in the afterlife. Both McCain and Romney were members of these churches for many years while the churches practiced overt racism. The Southern Baptists, formed to support slavery, did not issue an apology until 1995. Both denominations still have significant problems with racism among their congregants.

Scooter Libby was prosecuted for his own role in the Plame affair. Saying others were involved in leaks does not excuse his behavior.

Everly Waverly| 1.5.09 @ 2:53PM

An interloper---release the hounds!!!!
To not see the depth of corruption in the democrat party is one's adaptation of SFB. This continued revelation of how the "mugs" in Illinois operate and their friends in Washington do things is going to limit Obama to one failed term, bet on it.

james| 1.5.09 @ 3:15PM

Third world People will turn the US into a third world country.

David | 1.5.09 @ 3:31PM

Interloper, if you don't seen anything to criticize about Obama's church and his very reluctant resignation from it, then I assume you are not a Christian, or don't understand Christianity - correct? Do you know anything about Black Liberation Theology? Have you been to the Trinity United Church of Christ website?
There is so much more than 10 minutes of video to find not only objectionable, but disgusting.

Moreover, when the news of Wright's church broke last March and April, many blacks on the tube defended Wright by saying that those types of things are said every Sunday in black churches all across America. I was stunned and shocked by that revelation and admission. I had no idea. And you have the audacity to accuse white people of keeping the racial pot stirred. Please deal with the facts.

As to me being a racist to any degree, I have 2 half-black grandsons, a half-black niece, a half- mexican nephew, and a half-mexican sister-in law, all of whom I love. I know that doesn't prove I am not a racist, but those ARE the facts. I sure hope my grandchildren's father and grandparents don't attend a church like Obama's. I would hate for anyone to teach them that everything is whitey's or someone elses fault, and that America is a hateful place. However, I do like the fact that I will be able to point to the success of our new president Obama if the grandsons ever do get to the point, God forbid it, that they start blaming others for their own faults and failures.

Terry| 1.5.09 @ 3:35PM

How ridiculous! Interloper, indeed. Another liberal democrat accusing Republicans of racism to 'illuminate.' This is not illumination, but obfuscation. The Democratic party has a long history of pursuing interventionist policies that ultimately cost American blacks access to the success they've been promised. The reality of the Richardson storyline, currently unknown, is more likely to be a graceful (?) exit at the behest of the PE when Richardson cannot answer the right questions in the right way. As for Blagojevich, my guess is that he serves his full term and never spends another night in jail; the PE will make sure that he is shamed, but from outside any type of cell.

Yahweh| 1.5.09 @ 3:44PM

You guys are missing the point that really matters -- the connection to Rendell. Rendell is the governor who brought gambling to Pennsylvania. Less than 2 years later, it turns out we gave a slot license to a guy with ties to the mob (shocked, SHOCKED!). Rendell raised over $45M per election no one has ever raised more than $25M -- still. Comcast's leadership gave Ed thousands and millions, we gave them a $50M tax credit to locate a building in Philly -- even though they had already broken ground on the site. At least comcast put the world's largest projection TV in the lobby as a thank you.

The Rendell connection will be the next domino to fall, and Rendell is a name many know, having served as chair of the DNC in 2000.

David| 1.5.09 @ 3:47PM

Interloper, I forgot to address these things.

First, I believe McCain is an Episcopalian - not a Southern Baptist.

Second, you claim the Baptists excluded blacks until recent times. I don't know where you are getting that history. And please direct me to the place where I can find that apology to blacks that Southern Baptists supposedly made in 1995. If I'm not mistaken, I think there are more blacks who are Baptists than any other Christian denomination.

Please cite some authority as to your claim that the Southern Baptists were formed to promote slavery. Southern Baptists are fundamentalist in Christian doctrine. It's funny Interloper, and all of these years I thought those hated fundamentalist Christians were the abolitionists who brought about an end to slavery in Europe first, and then in America. Is it silly me - or misinformed you, Interloper?

As to Scooter Libby. What don't you understand. The entire matter was a political ploy by democrats. Leaking Plame's name was not a crime. She was not and undercover operative in the CIA. Leaking her name was to tell the truth about her Richard Clarke's ridiculous claims about uranium and Niger. EVEN IF it was a crime, Richard Armitage is the one who leaked the name, not Libby, and Fitzgerald knew that from the beginning. Why question people for years about WHO LEAKED IT, and who talked to whom and when, when Fitz knew? Bush had better completely pardon Libby before leaving office. The guy was found guilty of a faulty memory when every witness Fitz put on the stand also had trouble with his/her memory. Those are what we call FACTS.

brutus| 1.5.09 @ 3:48PM

As posted elsewhere on this board, unlike some Republicans, the Dim - ocrats will not have to face the rude gaze of public scrutiny and suffer any real consequences for the sins they may have committed. Just like in the Clinton administration, once The One is officially in power and has cleaned house (like Clinton in firing all 93 US attorneys, etc?), the Fix-A-Roo will be in. Richardson and any other liberal Democrat caught with their hands in the cookie jar will get off scott-free, until and unless enough of my fellow American voters, the appallingly ignorant ones who helped elect The Messiah, wake up to their mistake and vote these liberal socialists out of power, as happened in '94.

papasri| 1.5.09 @ 4:17PM

Whenever I read these comments (by apologists for democrat scoundrels), I always say that Dems are shameless; all that matters is 'power', so they can force their liberal ideology of everything is 'gray' (no right or wrong). Conservatives push their guys under the bus at the slightest hint of scandal or even an allegation. The 'right' has still a lot to learn in these politics of 'hard ball'.

You all forget, they are all BOTTOM FEEDERS;
WHEN ARE WE GOING TO RISE UP AND DRAIN THE FREAKING SWAMP ?

Peter McGrath| 1.5.09 @ 5:13PM

Frankly, the moral bankruptcy of the left is no longer in question. Collectivist politics are all about generating a voting class of dependents who can be relied upon to vote for continued or increased government benefits. This voting class ensures the Left's hold on power. Such policies have nothing to do with the well-being of such dependents. Any analysis of any given population which relies on government "benefits" as a substantial share of income reveals higher rates of crime, illegitimacy, illegal drug use, even death, than populations which don't rely on such benefits as a substantial share of income.

Any thinking person would support policies that liberate people from the tyranny of dependence, not policies that exacerbate the phenomena.

The Left's "cure" for what ails America is lethal. Its "compassion" truly kills. It undermines one's reliance on self and God. It creates an illusion of getting "something for nothing" and pours disincentives on achievement and hard work. The policies of the Left, in fact, undermine morality in that the very idea of taking from those according to their ability and giving to those according to their need is anathema to human nature.

Obama - who is closer to being an intellectual as anyone since Reagan - certainly knows that the answer to what ails America is not more government dependence. Unfortunately, he is with the big government Democrats - who love the perks and self-aggrandizement of power above all else. He will continue to abet them in their abject corruption and many will suffer and die under their tyranny.

Bob| 1.5.09 @ 5:20PM

Papasri, while I may disagree with what you consider "right" and "wrong", you've made a valid point here that, quite honestly, I didn't consider. Specifically, that social conservatives see things as black or white, and not gray. Since they are the party activists, what you say makes sense. However, there are those of us who are more libertarian oriented Republicans who are probably about 40% of the party that does see things as "gray". This is not "liberal ideology", but raising the importance of reason over belief in the decision making methodology. I don't see one religion being better than another and do not view policies in liberal/conservative terms. I look at pragmatism, i.e., will it work. Just remember that Republicans will never win without us. Calling us liberals does not help because from a fiscal and individual responsibility basis, we are strong conservatives.

David, sorry not to have checked back sooner.

You can consult any encyclopedia regarding the Southern Baptists. That denomination broke off from the main Baptist body prior to the Civil War because it held that slavery was ordained by God. The apology for slavery took place at the national convention in 1995. Feel free to Google.

I also have a feeling you haven't read the article because you keep insinuating that commenters injected race into the discussion.

As for the black experience, including the black church, it would be strange indeed if people largely excluded from the American dream, rebuked and scorned, perceived American society the same way as those privileged by it. They've earned the right to be very skeptical.

I cannot imagine Richardson bowing out "for the greater good". Nope. Fat boy knows this investigation plus the questions he will be asked during a confirmation process are going to get rough and he has been a baaaaaaaaaaad boy. He has been looking a tad bit unhappy and nervous of late.

Sarajo| 1.6.09 @ 12:30AM

NOTHING will surprise me when it comes to the Obama-manics. He comes out of Chicago politics so I am equally sure he is extremely familiar with pay to play politics. Too many of them are being uncovered, is it because we have turned a blind eye! Let's also look at the Clinton ties to the developer in Upstate NY who got some political favor from Sen Clinton. Lots of collusion!!!! They are all in it for what they can squeeze out of it and who cares about the American people and their welfare???!!!!!

Patvann| 1.6.09 @ 12:42AM

Hey "Interloper"...Which party supported the Klan for almost 100 years?

ruth| 1.6.09 @ 2:02AM

I have to laugh at what a joke Obama is. All smoke and mirrors. Three democrat governors under investigation for corruption, collusion with the Fannie/Freddie debacle which caused our economic meltdown, Franken trying to steal an election through another ACORN abomination, racist white demo senators who won't seat a scandal tainted black senator--and all before this clown is even inaugurated! Change we can believe in!!

Peter McGrath: Excellent post.

Bob| 1.6.09 @ 8:09AM

Ruth, and just think, we could have opted for a moron who promotes premarital unprotected sex as VP and a President who cheats on wives and couldn't manage his way out of a wet paper bag. The only good thing about them is that it is not smoke and mirrors.

Tim| 1.6.09 @ 9:20AM

Ruth,
That's just the reported scandals,
Just wait until the first flub happens at CIA headquarters under their new clueless boss and some major spy screw up causes the US some serious pain and suffering.

And the Iran shoe hasn't even dropped yet, that will happen when Israel takes out their Nuke sites
because the US won't act.

.....and don't forget.....the family feud that has aleady begun within the DNC.......which should develope into a full blown political war within the year...and what's worse there will be no bush or palin to blame.

Happy 2009....Ruth

The Prowler said, "CDR also had close business ties to Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, marketing and selling financial instruments created through low-income housing 'lease to own' programs across the country. 'If someone wants to understand just how deep Democrats are into the housing bubble and the economic crisis, they should look at some of the financial wheeling and dealing around some of those "lease to own" programs,' says a former Freddie Mac lobbyist based in Washington. 'It's a veritable 'who's who' of Democratic state and local politics from New York to Los Angeles.'"

One has to wonder if those responsible for the Freddie/Fannie economic collapse will finally get their comeuppance. Nah...they're Democrats.

The part that nobody seems to be seeing here is that both sides of this argument are partially (not all) correct.

Both sides have been guilty of wrongdoing, the only difference is; the democrats rally around the accused while the republicans throw thiers under the bus. These things have been done for what is "party power", it has little to do with the actual money (except for the fact that it takes money to run a campaign). It has to do with who has controlling power in the house and senate.

The democrats want to socialize your economic freedoms, while the republicans want to socialize your personal freedoms. Niether side wants to admit that both personal and economic freedoms can co-exist.

If Americans would just look at the platforms of both the Libertarian and Constitutionalist parties, the voting would change drastically. All of the comments on this blog have pointed at the political rhetoric of politics being a straight line and either left or right. This theory would exclude both Statists and Libertarians. Our political spectrum is two dimensional not one dimensional.

I encourage all of you to google the term "nolan chart" and do some serious research and think about your political views, thoughts, and feelings.

One more thing I would like to note. Political dissention is the very basis of the first ammendment right to free speech. Even if I find someones speech to be degrading or repulsive, the right to speak ones mind is needed to keep the debate going. It helps us all to see the other side of the issue and understand each other and makes us truly free. However name calling and degrading comments about others are NOT part of a healthy debate. It is one thing to put someones judgement into question, it is quite another to assault one's character simply because you dont agree with thier views.

Tim| 1.6.09 @ 1:32PM

Ruth,
Is it just me but my sides were splitting from my laughter this morning at the spector of a Democratic Senate Leader Harry Reid and his party refusing to seat a 71 year old African American from Illinois just two weeks to the day before Obama gets sworn in as the nations first African American president.
Then moments ago congressman Rush publically claims Racism.

I realize that they acted because they were not going to allow the arrested, Democratic Illinois Governor, "Blago" the opportunity to appoint someone but nevertheless, this is a political hoot in the grandest of scales.

A Joke, doesn't begin to describe this. I do agree with one of the posters that the corruption has been on going on both sides of the isle but its just extra rich the way the Democratic machine is being exposed at this crucial time and before our very eyes!

MY oh MY what a mess!

ruth| 1.6.09 @ 2:30PM

Tim, it's not just you that can't believe this farce. Not only do the demo emperors have no clothes, they are bending over and mooning all of us. Everytime I look at the Joker, Al Franken's face, I start to laugh all over again. Bob, I ain't gonna bite on your daily crazy Palin diatribe. Today is warm, sunny and beautiful outside and I'm going to go running! So go put a sock in it.

Sherry| 1.6.09 @ 3:47PM

Just in case you haven't seen this - it seems Obama forgot about a couple of meetings with Blago - transparency we can count on!
