These top figures in the SBC certainly knew the will of the Convention at large and yet they signed on to the SBECI anyway, showing utter disregard for the will of the voting messengers. Surely by doing so they knew they would give the impression (especially with the media and outsiders) that the SBC backed the initiative, or at a minimum, would create controversy among their brethren.
