ACORN Network Out to Blunt Lonegan Surge in New Jersey?
by

Looks like Steve Lonegan has a real opportunity to upset Democratic Newark Mayor Cory Booker in next week’s special election for the open Senate seat in New Jersey. That may be why the ACORN network is suddenly asserting itself in the state. Project Vote, Demos, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, and the Rutgers University Constitutional Law Clinic have sent a letter on behalf of the NAACP alleging “motor voter” violations. The notification letter, addressed to Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno and the New Jersey Department of Human Services (DHS), claims the state is not in compliance with the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) of 1993, which includes the motor voter provision.

Although it has been widely reported that the ACORN network is longer operational, in truth the same activists continue to operate under different names. Project Vote, a former ACORN affiliate, was at the center of voter fraud scandals that first came to light during the 2008 election cycle.

Polls show that Lonegan, a former mayor of Bogota, has closed the race to single digits despite his opponent’s large financial advantage. So the timing of the notice letter certainly raises some interesting questions.
