The Party for Women?

It’s been interesting to watch Democratic women react to the recent scandals involving Bob Filner and Anthony Weiner. Prominent female Democrats have started to join the shouts for these men to do what’s best and just leave the political arena for good.

But the question should be asked: Why now? Neither of these men’s personal failings are news. Once the furor of the original offense died down, they were allowed to re-emerge and run for office again.

Lori Saldaña, a former California assemblywoman, blew the whistle on Filner’s misconduct two years ago, but the matter was let drop. Current San Diego County Democratic Party Chairwoman Francine Busby knew about the allegations but did not pursue them. “I just know that these stories have been around and that he has said things that have been inappropriate,” she told UT San Diego.

Nancy Pelosi recently commented on the behavior of her former colleagues: “The conduct of some of these people that we’re talking about, it’s so disrespectful of women and what’s stunning is they don’t even realize, they don’t have a clue,” But though Pelosi did call for Weiner’s resignation from Congress in 2011, she refused to say he should drop out of the mayoral race. “That’s up to the people of New York,” she said.

And this is supposedly the “party for women”?
